Movie Review 2-1 "Shrek"

Main character

Shrek: he knows that he is a horrible monster. He has green skin, a bulky body, a big nose and mouth, and projecting ears. The word “ugly” is suited with his appearance.
He has no friends and lives in the swampland of a deep forest alone. Actually, he is a very caring person and kind, however many people hate him with calling him man-eating and monster because of his ugly appearance. People judge him by appearance. He himself also thinks that he isn’t liked by anyone, so he takes up a cold-hearted attitude to people around him. Maybe he thinks he would rather hate them than they hate him.


Donkey: he is what is called “speaking donkey”. Because Donkey can speak well, so he was ready to be caught by Load Farquaad. He escaped from him by a hairsbreadth, and met Shrek. At first, he was afraid of Shrek’s appearance. But soon he saw through to the heart of Shrek and he tried to behave friendly. He isn’t discouraged and follows Shrek although he rejects him over and over. He is very talkative and a blabbermouth. This is his strong and weak point. After, he became a good understanding partner of Shrek.


Princess Fiona: she is a heroine of this movie. She is confined the top of a tower that the dragon protects and there is a spell on her. She has a romantic idea that the prince who kissed her first can break a spell, however she is good at the Kung fu fighting. At first, she gets depressed to see the gap between her role model prince and Shrek. But soon she recognizes Shrek’s character and loves him. She can judge a person not by appearance but by what is on inside. Actually, she is a person in a particular situation and has a secret.


Story
Once upon a time, one monster lives near a swamp in the deep forest of one country. His name is Shrek, he lives alone because his appearance was ugly and scary. People around Shrek hate him and Shrek also hates them. He thinks living alone is stress-free for him. But sometime, he feels he is lonely.

One day, the Fairy Tale heroes like Pinoccio and the Seven Dwarfs are sent into exile from the village. Though the speaking Donkey was also ready to be caught, he could escape. After that, he met Shrek. also the Donkey follows Shrek and arrives at his house. That night, Shrek is awakend by a sound outside. Many fairy tale heroes are outside the door. Shrek was so angry because he would rather alone than be with someone.

He decided that he will negotiate with Lord Farquaad and ask him to get the fairy tale characters out from his swamp. After arriving at the castle, Shrek finds that Farquaad is searching for a strong knight who can save Princess Fiona. Shrek defeats the candidates quickly, and then Farquaad decides to make him go to save Fiona. Shrek and Donkey come to the castle and save Fiona by deflecting a dragons attack.

On their way to the castle, both Shrek and Fiona find their minds have changed. They became conscious of each other. But Shrek misunderstood after hearing the chatting between Fiona and Donkey. Shrek was so angry and felt so sad at the same time. They have a quarrel and split up. Fiona grew obstinate and tried to get marriage with Farquaad and Shrek has heard the truth of the thing from Donkey and went to the castle. He defeats Farquaad and kisses Fiona.


My opinion
The most important thing of this movie is not to judge a person by appearance but see through to the truth of the thing. Certainly, Shrek’s appearance is ugly, however he has very kind heart. But he understands that people around him will be scared of him because of this appearance although he behaves kindly to them. He also has a cold-attitude and protects himself. He makes an invisible wall in front of him. But he has honesty and become open through his encounters with Donkey and Fiona. I think this movie is for adults. An adult person can understand what the true point of this movie I think. (710 words)
